"Almost Wildcat" two weeks in Finland in the northeast in a nature is one of my dreams made this spring. In a few words, the convenience is provided by my friend Muriel. Flight Finnair Geneva-Helsinki and Helsinki-Kaajani it going well, the baggage in the cabin is not weighed and if he is a little big, it goes very well under the seat. So no problem to carry in my F-Stop roller, the 600 and the 300mm and D4s, the MacBook air and the two TC 1.4 and TC 2 which will allow me to vary the focal length up to 1200 mm. In the hold I have entrusted my F-Stop backpack with my business, a tripods TVC – 33 S Series 3 carbon fiber from Really Right Stuff and Wimberley tilting head. Once I transfer the ICU F-stop internal of the Literoom roller bag Mountain Sartori Exp. With this solution I gaining flexibility in case of problem of boarding, because the Interior compartment XL – Pro F ICU – Stop is self-contained with a handle and would surely the most restrictive controls in the cab. Despite its 11 kilo?
Airfare price: 497 CHF
Internal Camera Units XL – Pro ICU can contain a Nkkor 600 mm f4 with a single canopy and a 300mm f2.8 more unit D4s and TC 1.4 and 2 for a weight of 11,500 kg. The ICU between in the Literoom Roller and the Mountain Sartori Exp. Everything in the cabin at Finnair, even the Sartori.
After using the entire range of Tamrac, I find that F-stop is really better designed for porting.
Jani Määttä supports us from Kaajani up to Viiksimo (1 person 150 €2 persons €100 / person). The last 30 km are traversed on a sandy track still covered with ice in places. No village is crossed, as the pine forest. It is a service he offers, as well as housing and pension, in his popular centre of photographers from around the world. The Boreal Wildlife Centre, which he founded with Kari his friend filmmaker 8 years ago, is a former border guards. They are always present in the centre with their snowmobiles they come out almost every day. In the price of our stay, a tax is levied for permission to enter the Borderline, this border area prohibited access. The pace of the centre is programmed so: 9: 00 Breakfast: €10 and then NAP in rooms with 2-3 beds (3 person room: €75 / day) and 14: 00 Lunch: €15.

www.martinselkonen.fi Martin is parent of Jani, they provide transport between the two centres.
Then at 4 p.m. departure in 4 x 4 to 20 minutes depending on the day or rutted tracks covered with 40 cm of snow freshly fallen or downright icy. The lookout at the bear, but wolves and gluttonous area is on a bog. A big hide for 12 persons with toilet and dormitory is available (Big hide €150 / person) as well as 4 carriages (Small hide €180 / person) on deplorable sled seasonally. The small carriages are very comfortable for two photographers, with a jump in plastic for small needs. Me, I prefer to get out… A bassinet that can be expanded for two. Sleeping bags are available is fortunately very hot. Six openings for objectives and as many small double glass windows. I think that 6-8 bears are present at the feeding site. Wolves are rarer, I saw one in the middle of the night, other photographers had slept.
One of the lookout of Boreal Wildlife Center
Carriages to capercaillie are scattered in the forest and there, it's a little lottery. Big cocks move and on three nights, only one morning I was able to photograph one, while my friends had more luck. A stormy person night saw nothing, not stupid, the wildlife remains away… One morning the Rooster was behind my lookout hidden in shrubs.
The centre also offers blinds to the small cocks. The snowmobile with Kari Kemppainen displacement takes place at 4 o'clock in the morning with back around 8:30. The dance is on a bog on the edge of a small lake just 200 m from the border.
As throughout the spring is more or less in advance this year late. If the flight go on the Finland April 26 flying over Lakes frozen, return may 10 they were all beautiful blue. If I had to reschedule this trip, I would stay 2 weeks at the centre and not 7 days. For policyholders with tetras. The right choice would be to alternate with the Centre of Martin carriages which, this year, had a bear and her cubs for one year at this season.
Renting a car (200-€240 per week) would be cheaper than the taxi proposed by Boreal Wildlife Center
I regret the option that we had chosen to go in Kuusamo, because it to lost time and the tour in 4 x 4 with Finnature was ridiculous, chasing capercaillies in car is for me a stupid and dangerous rodeo that would be most beneficial to a Hunter in search of chicken as a photographer with an ethic. Alone, I would have upset and asked Olli back on to the hotel. It's true, I was accompanied by two ornithologists or the notion of image does not have the same importance. For them see 500 m a couple of bald offered a reward for me, frustration. In addition, we paid 3 x €250 for this trip of 3 hours in the morning to 1 p.m..
Fortunately the nature centre in the Bay of Liminganlahti near Oulu is beautiful, there are hotel rooms and a restaurant and a particularly well-made exposure. We asked Finnature the rental of the lookout at the Ruffs (3 times €120), in the Bay. President of Finnature and photographer Jari Peltomäki awaits us at 3 o'clock to take us. There is a lookout with a cover glass for 3 people. Moisture, it raining ropes, fogging the simple glass tiles. We fight without success to cloth kick before entre-ouvrir the door to balance the temperature. The hotel room in mezzanine with 5 beds returned us to €100 the night for us three.

I'm going back in June and September in Finland to see bears in shimmering blueberries and Heath. I also intend to do trekking in the reserve of Oulanka either along a beautiful river. The Finland is beautiful in its wild part. The civilization part is disappointing, in the style of North America. None without green and rather messy nature is so vast that it abused widely.
At the back we find the closed airport. Then after a while a cyclist arrived to open the doors. Quick passage of the customs, everyone is there? It embarked on the aircraft and on take-off with 15 minutes in advance. I promise to come back as soon as financially possible.
A 200-400 mm with 1.4 embedded Canon or a 500 mm light is preferable. With a 300 mm lies too far. Me, I mainly used the 600 mm with 1.4 TC (840 mm) with the TC 2 (1200mm) with a panoramic head speed can descend without too many problems to 1/50th and ISO climb quickly to 26,000! The carriages are equipped with support for screwing the Wimberley or kneecap.
A 32 GB CF card per day is enough, at about 20 Mb RAW image there is room for 1600 images. Me, I like check the result on a screen and make backups. I therefore took a MacBook air 11 inches and an external drive of 2 TB of Lacie Rugged Thunderbolt resistant.
End of April beginning of may the dawn is at 3 h 30 and dusk at 22 h 30 GMT + 3
Applications for iPhone: TomTom – WeaterPro – Guide Ornitho – TPE – Topo maps Finland are very useful.
Provide layered clothing starting with Merino Wool underwear polar and a feather jacket, plus a wind blow.
For the feet I love boots by Meindl insulating, but a little short to stir the snow or accidentally sink into the bog, then also take leggings.
Gloves fine slot of gloves with possibility of releasing fingers are sufficient. In the carriages hard on threads in the sleeping bag. the bottom of the body warm, the hands do not need gloves. But lookout tent must be bear-15 felt. I held despite the socks wet through chemical heaters in the Palm of each hand. Those in the shoes did not work if absorbing a little water. Next time, I'll take socks small plastic bags and spare with me where I mouillerais again the inside of my shoes.
